Deconstruction-Supernatural Horror Titles

We decided to research into the different names of current supernatural horror films as well as how we could present it to our audience (e.g. typography) in order to get some ideas when deciding a name for our own opening film.

The Conjuring

Definition of Conjuring: performing tricks: the performance of tricks that involve manual agility or the illusion of magic, as an entertainment.
The title is in a serif font. The simplicity of the font alongside the black and white colour scheme is effective as it contrasts the idea of "conjuring". Also, the format of the words differ from other films as The Possession and The Devil Inside, which don't have much emphasis on 'The' as in other titles, it is in a much smaller font size.

The Possession

The typography for The Possession is also in a serif font however, it isnt as bold as the title for The Conjuring. Also, the title looks as though it has been tamped with, through the splurges on some letters, as well as it looking as though it is wearing away,  which introduces violence. Despite 'Possession' is surrounded by several other words, they are all in smaller font size which draws the audience to that actual word.

Insidious

Definition: Something which is gradual and subtle, but has harmful affects.

Insidious is quite original as the title is rarely set out in a vertical format. The various colours within the letters in the title looks more effective with the common conventional colour scheme of red and white symbolises the danger and violence, as well as ghosts and horror, all commonly present in supernatural horror films. It is more effective to have the red coloured letters within the word that at the end or beginning as it makes the title stand our more.

The Devil Inside

The typography of the title font is also in a serif font similarly to the one in The Possession. As well as this, the font also looks as though it has been tamper with through the small dark marks around the letters and scratch-like parts of some letter. Furthermore, the 'd' in 'inside' is inverted which could be to emphasize the supernatural element of the film. The colour scheme for this title is a common white colour however, it differs from other titles as it isn't a pure white colour, as it seems to have a dirt-like look, which would be suitable for the genre. Though the actual title is in an off-white colour, the subtitle saying "No soul is safe" is in red, which re-enforces the conventions and symbolism's of the colour.

How we could incorporate this into our own title:

  • Capitalising all letter (as all of the above have this feature, and it is commonly used in many supernatural horror films.
  • Conforming to supernatural conventions through the incorporation of common colour schemes including red, white, black, and grey.
  • Using a serif font.
  • Have the title name to include "The".
  • Manipulating only some parts of the title.
