Attempting to Do Different Camera Angles
I decided to take a range of different long shots as long shots, as well as establishing shots, can be used to set the atmosphere. For example, this shot, shows a large and empty space therefore if sudden movements were to be added to this, such as a snapping twig, or someone running past, it would add suspense.
POV
I also attempted to film a point of view shot of someone walking which also creates as suspicious atmosphere. If we decided to use an shot similar to this, a Steadicam would be useful as when filming, it wasn't constant and i also found it hard to keep the camera still. The following clip shows this:
High Angle
High and low angles are used in several supernatural horror films such as The Possession. The antagonist is framed in a high angle shot which could be used to show the dominance and make what they do, more intimidating.
I made my own attempts at this by taking the shot with my brother (photographed) on top of the stairs, which made it easier to shoot. Similarly, in the shot from
The Possession, both have parts of their faces covered, which helps to add to the ominous atmosphere.
Low Angles
The low shot could be used to show vulnerable characters as it shows them in an inferior position, therefore i decided to make an attempt at this as in supernatural films, there is always a protagonist, which highlights the superiority of the antagonist. To take this shot I faced the camera slightly overhead to emphasize this.
Establishing Shot
|
From The Possession |
As in some supernatural horror films, such as
The Exorcist, there are religious elements, i decided to fuse this with the common establishing shot taken of the stereotypical urban house with is also featured in many horror films, by taking a long shot shot of a Church, which could also be seen as an establishing shot.

My Own |
Mid Shot
|
From The Ring |
This mid shot from the ring shows the face of the antagonist. I attempted to recreate this shot as I thought it would be an effective way to show how we could reveal the face of the antagonist whilst keeping the audience in suspense. Again, I also tried to recreate this, using the hood to cover parts of the face to keep the dark and mysterious atmosphere, common in most supernatural horror films.
